How to Measure Your Pet’s Neck for the Perfect Fit
No guesswork needed—just follow these easy steps to find the right collar size:
Option 1: Measure an Existing Collar
- Use a collar that fits with two fingers between the neck and collar.
- Lay it flat and measure end-to-end in inches.
- No tape measure? Use a ruler app or printable ruler.
Option 2: Use a String or Tape
- Wrap a string or cloth tape loosely around your pet's neck where the collar sits.
- Mark where it meets, then measure the string's length.
- Add 1-3 inches to ensure a comfortable fit.

Collar Size by Weight
Weight will give you a basic idea of where to start when looking for the correct collar sizing for your dog. Below will offer you a starting point of what sized collar to buy based on your dog’s weight:
Here’s a clearer breakdown of collar sizes by Dog Weight:
- Up to 10 lbs – XS (Up to 12”)
- 11-25 lbs – S (11”–15”)
- 26-55 lbs – M (13”–20”)
- 56-80 lbs – L (15”–24”)
These measurements are a good starting point but are not guaranteed that they will be 100% accurate for every dog. True measurements can vary between dogs based on neck size on their weight distribution. To get a truly accurate measurement we always recommend that you measure your dog's neck using a cloth measuring tape.
